I booked my flight!

I finally booked my flight and now I am officially on my way to Australia in 36 days!

First I’m heading to LA on January 18 for three days and then I get on a plane headed for Melbourne. I’m meeting my boyfriend there and we’re spending a few weeks exploring Melbourne before getting on another plane and heading to New Zealand for a two week road trip. In a camper van… and he doesn’t camp so this is going to be interesting.

I decided I was going on this trip a few months ago but procrastinated on booking my flight for a really long time because I was obsessed with reading airline reviews. I looked at every discount website out there and found a new flight almost everyday but eventually I ended up booking my flight with Quantas, directly on their website. I probably didn’t save any money but that’s okay, I’m going to be on a plane for more than 15 hours, I want to be comfortable and according to most of the reviews Quantas is a great airline for long term travel. This is my first time on a really long flight so I don’t know much about booking a flight just yet, but I’m learning. I found a lot of great tips for finding flight deals so it seemed like a good idea to share some of those. You know, for future reference. When I’m not being a paranoid freak and I decide to save a little bit of money and stick within my budget.

Try Hopper.

Download the app, put in the flights your searching for and get notified when the price changes. It’s that simple.

Get a travel credit card.

I have an AMEX Areoplan card and over the last year I’ve accumulated quite a few points but I’m saving those for flights once I’m in Australia. This post by Nomadic Matt has some great tips for the best travel credit cards.

Explore the Internet – and your options.

I signed up for all of the secret flying website and obsessively checked Kayak, Momondo and Skyscanner. They are great for helping find the cheapest and quickest flight but some might have hidden fees so look into them before booking. I found my flight on Momondo but it brought me to a third party website so I checked Quantas’ website just to be sure and the price was the same booking directly on there. Soooo do your research, I guess?

Clearly I’m a travel newbie and I need all of the advice I can get so if you have any tips for finding the best flights, please share them with me. I am terrified of flying, probably the worst flyer in the world but I’m hoping to pull an all nighter before I get on my 15 hour flight from LA. Wish me luck, this might not go well.
